San Valentino ‘Bacaia’ from San Valentino is a soft and juicy wine with lovely fresh red fruit and bright spicy notes. San Valentino owner and winemaker Roberto Mascarin can afford to pick his Sangiovese later than his Tuscan counterparts due to the constant sea breeze which prevents rot. The chilly nights help retain acidity in the wine. The result is a fairly high alcohol wine which is perfectly balanced with fresh acidity. It develops into a complex red with balsamic notes and dark cherry notes on the palate.

San Valentino, located in the hills of Rimini, has been owned by the Mascarin family since 1990 and is farmed by well-known enologist Luca D'Attoma. The wines are certified organic and many bio-dynamic techniques are used to produce the best quality grapes possible. Emilia Romagna is one of Italy’s wealthiest regions. It is a food lover’s paradise being home to Parmigiano Reggiano, Modena balsamic vinegar, Parma ham and numerous pasta dishes including tortellini and lasagne. The region’s wines are less well known but the wines from San Valentino are a great starting point if you want to discover them.
